How to pay Self Assessment tax bills (include taxcode adjustments if SA is submitted before 31 December)
After filing, HMRC calculates the tax due and provides your unique payment reference.
Payment Methods
- Debit card – fast, online.
- Online/telephone banking – ensure correct HMRC reference.
- Direct Debit – can split payments over time; set up via your HMRC account.
- Bank transfer – ensure correct payment reference.
- Cheque – slower, but accepted if mailed to HMRC.
Tax Code Adjustment (Submitting Before 31 December)
If you submit before 30 December and meet these criteria, HMRC may collect tax via your PAYE code:
- Employed or receive a pension.
- Tax owed is £3,000 or less.
- Have a National Insurance number.
Example: If you owe £2,500 and qualify, HMRC can spread the payment over the next tax year through salary or pension deductions, rather than requiring a lump sum on 31 January.
